The 56th International Film Festival of India (IFFI) 2025 began in Panjim, Goa, with an energetic and culturally rich opening ceremony on Thursday. Audiences were treated to colorful performances and creative tableaux representing diverse regions of India, celebrating both the country’s artistic heritage and its cinematic excellence.

Symbol of Sustainability: A Green Inauguration

Breaking away from tradition, Goa’s Governor Pusapati Ashok Gajapathi Raju and Chief Minister Dr. Pramod Sawant inaugurated the festival by watering a sacred Tulsi plant, highlighting IFFI’s commitment to environmental consciousness and sustainable values.

Carnival-Style Showcase and Cinematic Tributes

This year’s ceremony added an element of grandeur through a large-scale carnival-style showcase by several Indian production houses. The National Film Development Corporation (NFDC) commemorated its 50-year cinematic journey with a striking tableau featuring posters of classics including Jaane Bhi Do Yaaron, The Lunchbox, and Salaam Mumbai.
Another key highlight was a visually captivating tableau dedicated to Mahavatar Narsimha, drawing widespread applause from guests.

Goa’s Increasing Global Cinematic Role

In his address, Chief Minister Sawant reaffirmed Goa’s strengthening position as a film production hub.

“Goa is India’s most preferred shooting destination,” he shared, emphasizing the state’s world-class infrastructure, vibrant tourism ecosystem, film finance initiatives, and streamlined single-window approval system.

Sawant further added that IFFI has become a global bridge, linking Indian filmmakers, creators, and producers to worldwide audiences and opportunities.

A Festival of Global Cinema

Governor Raju, attending IFFI for the first time, expressed pride in the festival’s international footprint, noting its showcase of 270 films from 84 countries. He also acknowledged the contributions of late Manohar Parrikar, whose efforts cemented IFFI as an annual event in Goa.

Opening Film: ‘The Blue Trail’

The futuristic and thought-provoking Brazilian film The Blue Trail, directed by Gabriel Mascaro, inaugurated the cinematic screenings. The film has already earned acclaim globally, including the Grand Jury Prize at Berlinale 2025.

A Week of Cinema, Culture, and Collaboration

IFFI 2025 will run until 28 November, concluding with a grand closing ceremony. The Waves Film Bazaar, inaugurated on 20 November, will run parallel to the festival and close on 24 November, offering global networking and coproduction opportunities for filmmakers and producers.

Conclusion

With a fusion of tradition, sustainability, and world cinema, IFFI 2025 has set the tone for an exciting edition in Goa. As filmmakers, cinephiles, and industry leaders gather over the next few days, the festival promises to deliver a memorable celebration of stories, creativity, and cultural connection.
