MakeMyTrip Simplifies Train Travel Planning
Many train travellers in India often finalise their travel plans too late to secure confirmed seats. Although reservations open 60 days in advance, nearly 40% of MakeMyTrip users book their train tickets over multiple sessions—frequently ending up on the waitlist due to high demand.
Weekly variations in booking patterns make it difficult to predict how long confirmed seats will remain available. In April, seats on popular trains were usually sold out about 13 days in advance; by May, increasing demand pushed this figure beyond 20 days. To help navigate this uncertainty, MakeMyTrip has introduced Seat Availability Forecast, a smart tool that predicts how long seats are likely to remain open on any selected train.
Powered by years of historical booking data and current demand trends, this feature enables users to make better-informed decisions. Integrated seamlessly into both the app and website, it offers real-time guidance during the booking process. “Seat Availability Forecast addresses a major pain point for Indian rail passengers,” said Rajesh Magow, Co-founder and Group CEO, MakeMyTrip. “It’s designed to remove the guesswork from travel planning.”
Also launched is Sold-out Alerts, a helpful feature that notifies users when seat availability falls below a user-set threshold—encouraging timely bookings and smarter travel planning. Together, these tools aim to make rail travel in India more reliable and stress-free.
