Reasi Administration Rolls Out Plan to Promote Iconic Bridges as Major Tourist Attractions

The Reasi district administration, in partnership with the Tourism Department and Northern Railways, has rolled out a comprehensive plan to spotlight the Chenab Railway Bridge—the world’s highest—and the nearby Anji Khad Bridge as key tourist destinations in Jammu. These engineering feats are being recognised not only for their structural brilliance but also for their potential to attract a significant number of domestic and international visitors. Following the visit of Chief Secretary Atal Dulloo in April 2025, both bridges are being positioned as central attractions in Jammu’s core tourism circuit.

To enhance the visitor experience, land near the Chenab Bridge at Kauri has been earmarked for the development of tourism-related infrastructure and amenities. Furthermore, the Directorate of Tourism, Jammu, has requested Northern Railways to establish a Tourist Information Centre adjacent to a museum currently under construction near the Kauri Bridge. This museum will chronicle the story, construction challenges, and national significance of the bridge. LED screens and documentaries showcasing Jammu’s broader tourist offerings will also be set up to encourage tourists to explore more of the region.

A vital community-focused aspect of this plan includes encouraging local residents near the bridges to provide homestay accommodations. This initiative aims to boost employment, increase household income, and foster a sustainable tourism model. Additionally, the strategy involves developing a curated tourism circuit that pairs these bridges with natural attractions such as Chinkah Valley, offering visitors a blend of man-made marvels and scenic beauty. Travel agents and tour operators are being engaged to refine and promote this new tourism product.

This initiative is part of a broader effort to diversify tourism in Jammu, moving beyond traditional pilgrimage circuits like Vaishno Devi and Shiv Khori. By incorporating these new attractions into pilgrim itineraries, the government aims to increase tourist footfall. Promotional efforts, display boards, and guided tours are set to raise awareness and foster national pride by showcasing India’s engineering achievements, while simultaneously promoting regional growth and local entrepreneurship.
