Castaway Island Fiji, Counting Coral unveil sculptural gene bank for reef revival

In a bold stride toward marine conservation and sustainable tourism, OUTRIGGER Resorts & Hotels has teamed up with the non-profit Counting Coral to unveil a pioneering coral restoration initiative at Castaway Island, Fiji. At the heart of this effort is a visually captivating Sculptural Coral Gene Bank—the third of its kind in Fiji and a first for OUTRIGGER.

The large-scale, marine-grade sculpture began taking shape in May in the crystal-clear waters off Castaway Island and will continue installation through June. It’s designed not only to support the long-term regeneration of coral reefs but also to immerse guests in the importance of reef conservation through a uniquely engaging experience. This initiative deepens OUTRIGGER’s longstanding commitment to protecting the delicate reef ecosystems surrounding its Fijian resorts.

Meticulously designed over six months in California and crafted from marine-grade stainless steel, the gene bank will house over 500 genetically resilient parent corals. These corals will serve as a living seed vault, helping marine scientists monitor, safeguard, and propagate a rich diversity of coral species essential for reef restoration.

The project rolls out in two phases:

  • Phase One (May–June): Anchoring the sculpture, selecting corals, conducting surveys, and transplanting resilient species
  • Phase Two (2026): Installing smaller coral nursery structures, where fragments from the original corals will grow and be reintroduced into the reef—creating a self-sustaining restoration cycle

What sets this initiative apart is its immersive guest experience. Visitors can witness marine conservation in action through snorkeling excursions and educational touchpoints that bridge travel with environmental stewardship.

“This partnership with Counting Coral marks a major milestone in our OUTRIGGER Zone conservation initiative and our mission to protect the environment through responsible tourism,” said Ben Johnson, Area Director of Sales and Marketing, Fiji Islands at OUTRIGGER Resorts and Hotels. “The Sculptural Coral Gene Bank is more than an installation – it’s a living symbol of our commitment to reef protection through innovation, education and guest engagement.”

“Coral reefs are not only the lifeblood of Fiji’s marine ecosystems but also central to the local economy,” said Brooke True, Executive Director of Counting Coral. “By joining forces with OUTRIGGER and Castaway Island, Fiji we’re creating a one-of-a-kind restoration site that blends science and sculpture to inspire guests and protect coral ecosystems for the long term.”

This project highlights OUTRIGGER Resorts & Hotels’ leadership in regenerative tourism, while reinforcing Castaway Island’s commitment to safeguarding the breathtaking natural beauty that makes it one of Fiji’s most iconic private island escapes.
