IndiGo Enters Long-Haul Market with Mumbai–Manchester Route
IndiGo has officially launched its first long-haul wide-body service, deploying a rebranded Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner leased from Norse Atlantic Airways to connect Mumbai and Manchester. This marks a significant milestone as the low-cost airline ventures into the intercontinental travel segment—traditionally dominated by full-service carriers.
With this move, IndiGo edges closer to achieving its wide-body ambitions, ahead of the phased introduction of 60 Airbus A350s over the next few years.
“The long-haul market has long been ruled by full-service giants like Air India, Emirates, and British Airways. But IndiGo believes there’s room for a new type of carrier—one that offers a balance of affordability and quality service,” noted an aviation industry expert.
The Mumbai–Manchester route, last served by Jet Airways before its closure, will commence with flights on consecutive days—July 1 and 2. While the aircraft will be operated by Norse Atlantic Airways, it will feature full IndiGo branding and in-flight services tailored to IndiGo’s standards.
For Indian travellers eyeing northern England—renowned for its cultural richness, football legacy, musical heritage, and scenic countryside—the new connection offers convenient access and fresh opportunities.
A Full-Service Feel Without the Full-Service Fare
Onboard, passengers can look forward to hot meals, personal entertainment systems, and leather-trimmed seating across both cabins—features typically reserved for full-service international airlines. Despite these premium touches, IndiGo aims to maintain its signature competitive pricing, appealing to cost-conscious long-haul travellers.
Business class, dubbed IndiGo Stretch, will feature a 2-3-2 layout with full recliner seats, while economy class will adopt a 3-3-3 configuration with optional XL seats for extra legroom. All seats will come equipped with individual entertainment screens and power outlets. Vegetarian meals will be standard, with non-vegetarian options available via pre-booking.
Expanding the Wide-Body Horizon
Under the damp lease agreement with Norse, IndiGo plans to induct up to six Boeing 787-9 Dreamliners by early 2026. These aircraft will be gradually deployed on new long-haul routes, including planned services to London and Copenhagen, expanding IndiGo’s footprint beyond its established domestic and regional network.
This bold long-haul expansion signals a strategic shift for IndiGo’s parent company, InterGlobe Aviation Ltd, as it aims to capture a larger share of global traffic and appeal to premium travellers—segments previously dominated by full-service rivals.
With its inaugural Dreamliner flight to Manchester, IndiGo is not just flying farther—it’s reshaping the narrative of affordable long-haul travel for Indian flyers.
