Ahmedabad Recommended to Host Commonwealth Games 2030
India is all set to make history once again as the Commonwealth Games 2030 will be held in Ahmedabad, Gujarat, marking the nation’s return as host after two decades. The Executive Board (EB) of Commonwealth Sport, the global governing body of the Games, officially recommended Ahmedabad as the host city, ahead of the formal announcement scheduled for November 26, 2025, during the Commonwealth Sport General Assembly in Glasgow.
Ahmedabad to Host the Centenary Edition of the Commonwealth Games
The 2030 Games will be particularly special, as it marks the centenary edition of the Commonwealth Games. India last hosted the event in 2010 in New Delhi, where it delivered one of the most successful editions in Games history. Ahmedabad’s selection follows a close contest with Abuja, Nigeria’s capital, which missed out for the second time after previously bidding in 2014.
The upcoming Games are expected to highlight India’s growing stature in the global sports community while reinforcing its capacity to host large-scale, multi-sport events.
A Step Toward India’s Sporting Vision: Viksit Bharat 2047
Speaking on the occasion, P. T. Usha, President of the Indian Olympic Association (IOA), expressed her optimism about the milestone, stating: “The Games would not only showcase India’s world-class sporting and event capabilities, but also play a meaningful role in our national journey towards Viksit Bharat 2047. We see the 2030 Games as a powerful opportunity to inspire our youth, strengthen international partnerships and contribute to a shared future across the Commonwealth,”
The event aligns perfectly with India’s long-term national development goals and its growing emphasis on sports as a catalyst for youth empowerment and global engagement.
Commonwealth Sport’s Evaluation and Decision
According to the official statement by Commonwealth Sport, the recommendation of Ahmedabad followed a rigorous evaluation process conducted by the Commonwealth Sport Evaluation Committee. The assessment considered several key factors including:
- Technical delivery and logistical readiness
- Athlete experience and accommodation infrastructure
- Governance and management frameworks
- Alignment with Commonwealth Sport’s core values
Ahmedabad’s proposal impressed the committee with its modern infrastructure, robust connectivity, and commitment to sustainability and inclusivity. The city’s sports facilities and hospitality ecosystem are expected to set new benchmarks for future Games.
India’s Growing Global Sports Ambitions
The confirmation of the 2030 Commonwealth Games adds to India’s expanding sports ambitions on the world stage. The country is also bidding to host the Olympic and Paralympic Games in 2036, with the International Olympic Committee (IOC) expected to announce the host city in 2027.
In November 2024, the Indian Olympic Association submitted a Letter of Intent to the IOC, expressing its desire to bring the Summer Games to India. The nation is currently participating in the IOC’s Continuous Dialogue Process to advance its candidature.
Overcoming Global Hosting Challenges
The Commonwealth Games have faced multiple challenges in recent years, with several countries withdrawing due to financial constraints and rising hosting costs.
- The 2022 edition, initially awarded to Durban, South Africa, was later hosted by Birmingham, UK, after Durban’s withdrawal.
- Similarly, the 2026 Games in Victoria, Australia, were cancelled after costs ballooned from AUS$2.6 billion to AUS$7 billion.
- As a result, Glasgow (Scotland) stepped in to host the next edition.
Amid these global setbacks, India’s readiness and enthusiasm to host the centenary Games in 2030 have been widely welcomed as a positive and stabilizing development for the Commonwealth sporting community.
A Global Sporting Celebration Awaits
The Commonwealth Games 2030 in Ahmedabad will not only showcase India’s organizational excellence and sporting talent but also celebrate 100 years of Commonwealth sporting heritage. With its blend of tradition, innovation, and inclusivity, the Games promise to deliver an unforgettable experience for athletes and spectators alike.
As preparations gear up, the event is expected to boost tourism, infrastructure, and the local economy, reinforcing India’s position as a global sporting powerhouse.
