Andaman to Add More Blue Flag Beaches for Eco-Tourism Boost

The Andaman and Nicobar Islands are set to expand their eco-tourism efforts by seeking Blue Flag certification for five more beaches, in addition to the already certified Radhanagar Beach on Swaraj Dweep. Chief Secretary Chandra Bhushan Kumar announced the initiative, aimed at attracting environmentally conscious travellers and promoting sustainable coastal tourism. The Blue Flag is a globally recognised eco-label awarded to beaches that meet stringent standards for safety, cleanliness, and environmental stewardship.

Kumar confirmed that five beaches have recently undergone evaluations for the certification. In parallel, infrastructure enhancements are underway, including the development of a new 500-passenger terminal jetty at Swaraj Dweep. He also highlighted efforts to boost cultural tourism through vibrant events like the Island Tourism Festival, the Coconut Festival, and a National Book Trust-supported Book Fair, which add cultural depth to the islands’ scenic charm.

Looking ahead, a new airport is set to be operational in Diglipur, North Andaman, significantly improving connectivity and opening up lesser-explored regions such as Great Nicobar to tourists. The administration continues to reinforce sustainability measures, including a ban on small plastic bottles and marine clean-up drives, which have already removed over 50,000 kg of ocean waste.

On the energy front, the union territory is collaborating with NTPC to establish a 50 MW LNG plant, along with implementing a grid-based energy link between North and South Andaman. The two-year project, being executed in partnership with Power Grid Corporation, aims to deliver cleaner and more consistent energy to support the expanding tourism infrastructure while safeguarding the islands’ delicate ecosystem.
