Andhra Pradesh is taking significant steps to enhance its tourism landscape by introducing a new heritage tourism policy aimed at preserving and promoting historic public buildings across the state. According to the state’s Tourism Minister, Kandula Durgesh, this initiative will tap into the cultural and architectural wealth of Andhra Pradesh while boosting its tourism potential.

Heritage Tourism Policy Under Consideration

Speaking at a national tourism conference, Minister Kandula Durgesh revealed that the proposed heritage tourism policy is under active consideration. The vision behind the policy is to restore and highlight historic public buildings, turning them into tourism assets that attract both domestic and international visitors.

This initiative aligns with the state’s broader tourism strategy, which aims to position Andhra Pradesh as a hub for cultural, spiritual, and experiential travel.

Focus on Pushkarams and Tent Cities

The government is also planning a special policy for Pushkarams, the once-in-12-year river festivals that hold immense cultural and spiritual significance, comparable to the Kumbh Mela of North India.

Under this policy, tent cities will be built along the riverbanks to accommodate the massive influx of pilgrims and tourists. These facilities will provide comfortable, organized, and sustainable accommodations, ensuring that Pushkarams are celebrated with modern hospitality while preserving their traditional essence.

Tourism Policy 2024–29: Tourism as an Industry

Minister Durgesh also emphasized the importance of the Andhra Pradesh Tourism Policy 2024–29, announced by the N. Chandrababu Naidu government last year. Under this framework, tourism has officially been accorded industry status, marking a transformative step in recognizing the sector’s role in driving economic growth and employment generation.

The policy focuses on infrastructure development, private sector participation, and sustainable tourism models to create a stronger foundation for the industry.

Driving Growth Through Cultural and Heritage Tourism

By combining heritage conservation, spiritual experiences, and innovative tourism infrastructure, Andhra Pradesh is set to emerge as a premier cultural destination. The state’s efforts will not only protect historical assets but also provide immersive travel experiences that strengthen its identity on the global tourism map.

Conclusion

The proposed heritage tourism policy, coupled with initiatives like tent cities for Pushkarams and the 2024–29 tourism framework, reflects Andhra Pradesh’s commitment to sustainable and experience-driven tourism. With historic buildings, river festivals, and cultural heritage at the forefront, the state is poised to attract more visitors while delivering lasting economic and cultural benefits.
