Andhra Pradesh targets adventure tourism surge
Andhra Pradesh is witnessing a significant surge in interest following the launch of its new adventure tourism policy, with over 130 applications received from individuals and organisations eager to offer land, water, and air-based adventure experiences. This enthusiastic response follows the issuance of Government Order Ms. No. 15, which sets forth a strong regulatory framework focused on eco-friendly practices, stringent safety standards, and youth employment. The Andhra Pradesh Tourism Development Corporation (APTDC) is currently evaluating these applications, with a second submission window expected to open soon.
The policy categorises adventure tourism into three segments: land (such as trekking, rock climbing, ATV rides), water (including scuba diving, kayaking, river cruising), and air (featuring paragliding, skydiving, and air safaris). To operate legally, all providers must register, complete safety audits, offer first-aid training, and ensure that individuals under 18 are not allowed to participate in high-risk activities. Additionally, operators are required to provide insurance coverage of at least INR 2 lakh per participant and post clearly visible risk signage.
APTDC Managing Director Dr. Amrapali Kata emphasised the state’s commitment to becoming a premier adventure tourism destination while maintaining the highest safety and environmental standards. The policy also promotes ‘Leave No Trace’ principles, mandates certified equipment, and introduces routine inspections by a dedicated monitoring committee.
Violations of the guidelines carry strict penalties, including potential blacklisting or licence cancellation, especially in the event of accidents. With such a robust framework and growing interest from operators, Andhra Pradesh is rapidly positioning itself as a major adventure tourism hotspot in India.
