Assam Launches Sign Language Training for Inclusive Tourism
In a pioneering move to foster inclusivity in tourism, Assam has trained multiple industry stakeholders including hoteliers, tour operators, and guides in Indian Sign Language. The initiative aims to create a welcoming environment for travellers with disabilities, ensuring equal access and better experiences for all.
The five-day workshop, titled “Sign & Serve”, concluded in Guwahati on Friday. Organized as the state’s first formal step toward inclusive tourism, the program introduced participants to practical sign language skills to enhance communication with differently-abled tourists.
“With the launch of the ‘Sign & Serve’, the Indian sign language workshop, Assam has taken its first step toward a truly inclusive travel environment a small beginning with the promise of a larger transformation,” the organizers said.
This initiative aligns with India’s broader vision of accessible tourism, highlighting Assam’s commitment to becoming a more inclusive and traveller-friendly destination. By empowering frontline stakeholders with sign language training, the state is setting a precedent for others to follow in promoting barrier-free travel experiences.
