Assam to Promote Tea Tourism with New Project
In a landmark step to boost tourism and showcase the rich heritage of Assam, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Thursday launched a tea tourism project that aims to turn the state’s iconic tea gardens into world-class tourist destinations.
The initiative, undertaken by the Assam Tourism Development Corporation (ATDC), highlights Assam’s unique cultural and natural charm while tapping into the global potential of tea tourism.
Transforming Tea Gardens into Tourist Hubs
Assam is globally renowned for its tea, but this project marks a new chapter in leveraging its heritage for tourism. The focus will be on transforming tea estates into luxury travel experiences, combining the authenticity of Assam’s tea culture with modern hospitality.
By developing unique stays and curated visitor experiences, the state government aims to attract both domestic and international travelers, further enhancing Assam’s tourism ecosystem.
Durrung Tea Estate Bungalow Revamped into Luxury Hotel
One of the highlights of the project is the transformation of the heritage bungalow at Durrung Tea Estate in Sonitpur into a luxury hotel. This iconic property has been redeveloped by The Postcard Hotel Group, known for its boutique and experiential hospitality offerings.
Guests can now experience the charm of Assam’s tea gardens while enjoying world-class comfort, making it a perfect blend of tradition and modern luxury.
Boosting Assam’s Tourism Potential
Chief Minister Sarma emphasized that this initiative will not only provide a boost to Assam’s tourism sector but will also create employment opportunities for local communities. By introducing tea tourism, Assam is set to position itself as a unique destination where travelers can experience tea heritage, lush landscapes, and immersive cultural experiences.
The government, in collaboration with private partners, aims to expand similar projects across more tea estates in the future, ensuring sustainable growth and community participation.
Assam’s Tea Tourism: A Step Towards Global Branding
With this project, Assam is poised to join the global tea tourism map, alongside destinations like Sri Lanka and Darjeeling. The focus on heritage properties, local culture, and eco-friendly tourism initiatives makes it an attractive offering for travelers seeking offbeat and experiential journeys.
As tea tourism takes shape, Assam is set to redefine its image from being the world’s largest tea producer to also becoming a premium cultural and adventure travel hub.
