Centre Approves 271 Eco-Tourism Sites in Himachal, 88 Underway
In a major push to boost eco-tourism, the Union government has cleared 271 eco-tourism sites across Himachal Pradesh. Deputy Chief Minister Mukesh Agnihotri informed the State Assembly that while 11 sites have already been allotted, the process is underway to allot 77 more in the near future.
Boost to Revenue and Eco-Friendly Tourism
Replying to a debate on a private members’ resolution by BJP MLA Jeet Ram Katwal seeking a review of the eco-tourism policy, Agnihotri highlighted the financial gains from the initiative. In 2024, seven eco-tourism sites were allotted, generating a revenue of ₹2.36 crore. This year, the government expects to allot 28 more sites, anticipated to bring in an additional ₹5 crore in revenue.
Policy-Driven Expansion
The Deputy CM emphasized that the state government is promoting eco-tourism in line with its stated policy, providing promoters the flexibility to select their preferred sites for activities. This model aims to ensure both economic growth and sustainable development of the state’s natural assets.
Expanding Activities Across Forest Circles
Beyond the designated eco-tourism sites, Himachal is actively promoting complementary activities like nature parks, nature trails, and camping. These ventures, carried out within the forest circle, are generating annual revenues of around ₹3 crore, further strengthening the eco-tourism ecosystem.
