The Indian Hotels Company (IHCL), India’s largest hospitality company, has announced the signing of a new Ginger hotel in Shillong, marking the brand’s much-anticipated debut in Meghalaya. This greenfield project reinforces IHCL’s strategic expansion across India’s Northeast, catering to both business and leisure travellers.

Shillong: An Ideal Destination for Ginger’s Smart Hospitality Philosophy

Commenting on the announcement, Suma Venkatesh, Executive Vice President – Real Estate & Development, IHCL, said: “Shillong, with its vibrant spirit, resonates with Ginger’s philosophy of blending work and play. Under the Smart City program, Shillong is evolving into a significant administrative and economic hub. Its prime location, coupled with panoramic views of the hills, make it an ideal setting for the brand to serve the city’s evolving hospitality needs. We are delighted to partner with Mr. Khongsngi for this project.”

Renowned as the Scotland of the East, Shillong is celebrated for its rolling hills, colonial charm, and vibrant Khasi culture. The city draws visitors to iconic attractions such as Umiam Lake, Elephant Falls, and the popular Shillong Cherry Blossom Festival.

A 90-Key Hotel Designed for Modern Travellers

The upcoming 90-key Ginger Shillong will showcase the brand’s signature lean-luxe hospitality. Key facilities will include:

  • Qmin, the brand’s signature all-day dining restaurant
  • A stylish bar
  • A meeting room for business travellers
  • A fully equipped fitness centre

The hotel is set to cater to both corporate and leisure guests seeking comfort, convenience, and contemporary design.

A Strategic Partnership Supporting Shillong’s Growth

Sharing his thoughts on the collaboration, Khongsngi, the owning partner, stated: “We are happy to partner with IHCL to bring the Ginger brand to Shillong and contribute to the city’s growing hospitality landscape.”

Mr. Khongsngi, a Shillong-based real estate developer, also serves as President of the Khasi Hills Archery Sports Institute (KHASI), an organization dedicated to promoting the traditional sport of archery in Meghalaya.

IHCL’s Expanding Presence in Meghalaya

With this new development, IHCL’s footprint in Meghalaya grows to three hotels, including one under development. The company continues to focus on strengthening its presence in culturally rich and high-potential destinations.
