Himachal Pradesh to Boost Religious Tourism, Says CM Sukhu
Himachal Pradesh is set to witness a renewed push towards religious tourism, as Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu reaffirmed the state government’s commitment to enhancing pilgrimage infrastructure and improving basic amenities for devotees visiting the hill state.
Speaking during a visit to the Tara Devi Temple near Shoghi on January 1, the Chief Minister highlighted the vital role religious tourism plays in preserving heritage while contributing to economic development and local livelihoods.
Religious Tourism: A Bridge Between Faith and Development
“Religious tourism serves as a vital bridge between heritage and modern development,” said CM Sukhu, noting that millions of devotees visit Himachal Pradesh annually to seek spiritual fulfilment at its revered Shaktipeeths and other sacred sites.
He added that the steady flow of pilgrims not only strengthens the spiritual identity of the state but also significantly boosts employment opportunities and income generation for local communities, especially in rural and semi-urban regions.
Focus on Improving Pilgrim Amenities
The Chief Minister emphasised that the government is prioritising the improvement of essential facilities for pilgrims, including better road connectivity, sanitation, accommodation, and overall visitor infrastructure at prominent religious destinations.
These initiatives aim to make pilgrimage travel safer, more comfortable, and accessible for devotees from across India, while ensuring sustainable tourism growth in the ecologically sensitive hill state.
New Year Visit to Tara Devi Temple
Marking the beginning of the New Year, CM Sukhu, accompanied by his wife Kamlesh Thakur, who is also the MLA from the Dehra Constituency, offered prayers at the Tara Devi Temple. The visit underscored the cultural and spiritual importance of religious sites in Himachal Pradesh and the government’s intent to promote them responsibly.
Strengthening Himachal Pradesh’s Spiritual Tourism Appeal
With its rich spiritual heritage, scenic landscapes, and centuries-old temples, Himachal Pradesh continues to attract devotees seeking both faith-based travel and tranquil mountain experiences. The renewed focus on religious tourism is expected to further enhance the state’s position as a leading pilgrimage destination in North India.
