IHG to Open Garner Hotel in Kyoto, Expanding Japan Presence

IHG Hotels & Resorts (IHG) has entered into an agreement with Taisei Yuraku Real Estate Co Ltd and Pacifica Hotels G.K. to launch a 103-room hotel under its newest mainstream conversion brand, Garner, further expanding its footprint in the beloved city of Kyoto.

Garner Hotel Kyoto Shijo Karasuma, the fourth Garner hotel in Japan, will join the IHG system in November 2025, following a comprehensive renovation that will include new interior design elements and the addition of signature Garner brand features.

Located in the upscale Shijo Karasuma area, this new hotel enhances IHG’s offerings in the mainstream segment, giving travellers even more options in Kyoto.

Abhijay Sandilya, Managing Director, Japan & Micronesia, IHG Hotels & Resorts and CEO of IHG ANA Hotels Group Japan, commented: “Bringing the Garner brand to Kyoto in collaboration with Taisei Yuraku Real Estate Co Ltd and Pacifica Hotels G.K. represents another milestone for our rapidly growing mainstream conversion portfolio, just six months after the brand’s introduction in Japan.
We continue to identify strong opportunities for expansion across our brand portfolio, and this latest signing is a prime example—adding to an estate that includes everything from mainstream options like Garner and Holiday Inn, to premium stays at Crowne Plaza, and luxury offerings at Six Senses and the forthcoming Regent hotel.”

Takeshi Uekusa, President of Taisei Yuraku Real Estate Co Ltd, said: “We’re excited to partner with IHG to bring the first Garner hotel to Kyoto. With the growing interest to this historic city globally, it’s timely to be adding greater choice for both domestic and international travellers. Offering guests an international brand that’s designed to offer quality, relaxed stays at an affordable price, as well as easy ways to book through IHG’s global systems will enhance the overall guest experience and give travellers confidence they have made the right decision.”

Seth Sulkin, President of Pacifica Hotels G.K., added: “This partnership further builds on our strong relationship with IHG, and we are proud to support the growth of the Garner brand in Japan. We believe the midscale segment holds tremendous growth potential, and this project fits perfectly within our strategic expansion plans.”

The Garner Hotel Kyoto Shijo Karasuma is conveniently situated within walking distance of both Gojo and Shijo subway stations, and just a 10-minute taxi ride from Kyoto Station, which connects to the Shinkansen. Guests will have access to a rich mix of heritage and modern experiences nearby, including Nishiki Market, Kyoto Imperial Palace, Kyoto International Manga Museum, as well as high-end shopping and dining.

Upon its opening in late 2025, this hotel will bring IHG’s presence in Kyoto to four operational properties: Six Senses Kyoto, ANA Crowne Plaza Kyoto, Holiday Inn Kyoto Gojo, and now, Garner Hotel Kyoto Shijo Karasuma—with Regent Kyoto expected to open in 2028.

Nationwide, IHG currently operates 54 hotels across 10 brands in Japan, with 17 additional properties in the pipeline, underlining the group’s continued focus on strategic expansion across the country.
