As corporate travel rebounds and affluent flyers seek elevated experiences, leading airlines connecting India to global destinations are aggressively enhancing premium cabin offerings. Carriers are investing heavily in aircraft retrofits, lounge facilities, upgraded services, and luxury seating options to meet rising demand.

Business Travel Demand Fuels Cabin Enhancements

The share of first and business class seats across international flights serving India has risen sharply in the past two years, according to aviation analytics firm Cirium. With companies resuming travel and high-yield passengers prioritising comfort, airlines are responding by expanding their premium offerings.

Among the standout trends:

  • Premium cabin capacity has more than doubled since 2021.
  • Demand for comfort, flexibility, and enhanced service on long-haul routes is driving premiumisation.

Air India Leads the Upgrade Initiative

At the forefront of this shift is Air India, which is undertaking an extensive cabin modernisation programme. The Tata Group carrier is investing approximately $400 million to retrofit aircraft with more premium seats and contemporary interiors.

Key Enhancements Include:

  • Doubling premium seats: A significant increase in business and first class capacity across long-haul routes.
  • New aircraft and lounges: Introduction of a new Boeing 787 Dreamliner and a luxury lounge at Delhi’s primary airport, featuring sleeper suites for travellers with long layovers.
  • Fleet expansion: Six additional long-haul Dreamliners are scheduled to join this year, enhancing both capacity and service quality.

Air India’s CEO, Campbell Wilson, has highlighted that while premium cabins cost more to operate, they command higher yields benefiting overall profitability on routes such as Dubai, New York, and London.

Global Carriers Step Up Premium Offerings

International airlines serving India are similarly enhancing their premium experiences:

  • Dubai-based Emirates plans to deploy aircraft with upgraded cabins under a multi-billion dollar programme, emphasising comfort and modernised interiors.
  • Germany’s Lufthansa will introduce fully enclosed business class suites with sliding doors on select routes to Delhi starting July, offering hotel-like privacy and comfort.

These enhancements reflect a broader realignment of global airline strategies toward attracting premium travellers who are willing to pay for superior comfort and service.

Elevated In-Flight Experiences Beyond Seating

Airlines are also improving the “soft” aspects of premium travel:

Several carriers are collaborating with top chefs to curate premium menus tailored to Indian tastes. Qatar Airways has teamed up with Michelin-starred chef Garima Arora, while Singapore Airlines offers menus crafted by celebrity chef Sanjeev Kapoor.

Onboard beverage and culinary options are being refreshed to appeal to more sophisticated palates.

What It Means for Passengers

For travellers booking international flights from India, this trend suggests:

  • More choices in premium cabins with enhanced comfort and service.
  • Improved airport and in-flight experiences on both business and first class.
  • Potential fare increases on popular routes driven by heightened demand and limited premium supply.

Motiverge Travel will continue to monitor developments in airline premium offerings. With evolving traveller expectations and expanding business routes, now is an opportune time to explore upgraded travel options and re-think your next corporate journey or luxury escape.
