Inside Taj Bangalore: Redefining luxury living at the airport

The Taj Bangalore, designed by Morphogenesis, sets a new benchmark in transit hospitality at Kempegowda International Airport. A collaboration between Taj and Bengaluru International Airport Limited (BIAL), this architectural expansion adds 220 new rooms, including standard and premium suites, thoughtfully designed for privacy and uninterrupted runway views.

The project not only enhances the hotel’s capacity but also elevates its design identity ensuring harmony between the new and the existing structures while reinforcing Bengaluru’s status as a global aviation hub.

Architectural Language Rooted in Context

The expansion adopts a C-shaped architectural form, offering panoramic views and maximizing natural light throughout the interiors. Drawing from the traditional courtyard typology of southern India, Morphogenesis brings together contextual design and modern spatial planning to create a serene, open environment within a bustling airport setting.

The two hotel phases are seamlessly connected through a ground-level corridor that merges the lobbies for operational efficiency and guest convenience. A bridge on the third level visually and functionally links both structures, providing dramatic views of the airport landscape and serving as a defining design element on the façade.

The Atrium: A Symbolic Heart of the Design

At the core of the hotel’s spatial experience lies a five-level atrium, bathed in natural light from its skylit roof. The atrium features a sculptural installation inspired by the banyan tree, paying homage to Bengaluru’s moniker as the “Garden City.”

Surrounding this space are landscaped sunken courts and lobby-level dining zones, creating a calm and welcoming ambiance. A semi-open restaurant on the fifth floor, designed as a modern reinterpretation of traditional Indian pavilions, extends the dialogue between interior and exterior spaces, offering panoramic runway views for diners.

Material Palette and Interior Expression

The materiality of the Taj Bangalore extension reflects regional authenticity and modern sophistication. Surfaces feature Serpeggiante marble, locally sourced Sadarhalli granite, and warm wooden accents, establishing a tactile connection with the local environment.

Subtle tones of green and blue reference Bengaluru’s lush greenery and tranquil lakes. Inside, bespoke furniture, locally inspired carpets, and artworks curated from regional artisans add layers of storytelling, blending local craftsmanship with Taj’s signature aesthetic of timeless luxury.

Sustainable and Climate-Responsive Design

The façade design of the hotel combines granite-clad vertical planes with sleek glass surfaces, balancing solidity and transparency. The building orientation and massing are optimized for natural ventilation and self-shading, reducing heat gain and improving energy efficiency.

By employing local materials, the design minimizes embodied energy while ensuring durability and authenticity. These passive architectural strategies enhance comfort and sustainability, proving that environmental responsibility can seamlessly coexist with luxury hospitality.

A New Paradigm in Airport Hospitality

The expanded Taj Bangalore stands as a fusion of travel, culture, and sustainability, redefining what airport hospitality can be. Morphogenesis has created a space that is operationally efficient, architecturally striking, and deeply rooted in place embodying the rhythm of a global city grounded in cultural identity.

Through its innovative planning, context-sensitive design, and environmental stewardship, Taj Bangalore serves as a model for future airport-oriented developments that elevate the guest experience while honouring local heritage and sustainable principles.
