Kolkata Airport Gets Direct Metro Connectivity Next Week

Metro Railway Kolkata has confirmed that the city’s airport will soon be directly linked to its metro network, with the 6.77 km Yellow Line extension from Noapara to Jai Hind Bimanbandar set to begin operations next week. This development marks a key step forward in India’s urban transit landscape, offering residents and visitors a faster, more reliable, and efficient travel option.

The new stretch comprises four major stations- Noapara, Dum Dum Cantonment, Jessore Road, and Jai Hind Bimanbandar. Out of these, three (Dum Dum Cantonment, Jessore Road, and Jai Hind Bimanbandar) have been newly constructed under this ambitious project. With this extension, Kolkata’s airport will be seamlessly connected to the metro system, significantly improving accessibility. The service is expected to drastically cut down travel times for airport-bound commuters, especially given the frequent road traffic snarls in the city, particularly during peak hours.

For frequent flyers, business travelers, and residents alike, this metro link ensures a smooth, predictable, and comfortable journey to and from the airport. Unlike road travel, where delays are common, the metro guarantees punctuality, making air travel logistics more convenient for domestic as well as international passengers at the eastern gateway of India.

Developed at an estimated cost of ₹1,866 crore, the project reflects Kolkata’s determination to modernize its transportation systems while embracing advanced urban mobility solutions. Each of the newly built stations has been equipped with cutting-edge facilities designed to enhance passenger comfort, accessibility, and efficiency.

The Dum Dum Cantonment, Jessore Road, and Jai Hind Bimanbandar stations feature spacious ticket counters capable of handling large crowds, ample seating arrangements for waiting passengers, and elevators to assist elderly commuters, differently-abled individuals, and travelers with heavy luggage. The station layouts have also been planned to manage peak-hour rushes effectively, ensuring smooth movement of passengers.

Alongside convenience, safety and security have been prioritized. The stations are fitted with advanced surveillance systems, clear directional signage, and thoughtfully designed pedestrian pathways. These measures provide a safe and stress-free travel experience for metro users.

The inauguration of the Yellow Line extension is a landmark moment for Kolkata and India’s metro network as a whole. It highlights the city’s forward-looking approach to tackling urban mobility challenges caused by growing populations and heavy traffic. By setting a new standard for sustainable and technology-driven transport, the project serves as a model for other cities across the country.

Beyond improving travel convenience, this direct metro-airport link strengthens India’s focus on connecting major infrastructure hubs with urban centers. Efficient airport access is essential for fostering economic growth, business mobility, tourism, and global trade. This extension ensures that passengers have access to a dependable, eco-friendly, and modern mode of transport, aligning with India’s long-term vision of sustainable urban mobility.

The project is also expected to benefit nearby neighborhoods, potentially spurring economic development, boosting property values, and enhancing access to both residential and commercial areas. By offering a viable alternative to private vehicles, the metro can ease traffic congestion and contribute to reducing pollution in Kolkata’s densely populated zones.

The 6.77 km Yellow Line extension from Noapara to Jai Hind Bimanbandar represents a major leap forward for the city’s transportation infrastructure. With its four stations, state-of-the-art amenities, and direct link to the airport, it will transform how people travel across Kolkata. More than just a convenience, the service reinforces India’s commitment to building modern, integrated, and sustainable transit systems for the future. This new metro service is poised to redefine airport travel—making it quicker, smoother, and far more accessible for all.
