Maharashtra to Establish ‘Namo Tourism Information Centres’ at Four Iconic Forts
In a significant move aimed at strengthening Maharashtra’s heritage tourism infrastructure, the state government has approved the establishment of ‘Namo Tourism Information and Facility Centres’ at four of its most historic forts Raigad, Pratapgad, Shivneri, and Salher.
The initiative, sanctioned under the Regional Tourism Development Scheme for 2025–26, is designed to provide modern amenities and streamlined visitor facilities at these cultural landmarks, reinforcing Maharashtra’s commitment to preserving its legacy while promoting sustainable tourism.
Enhancing the Heritage Tourism Experience
According to a government resolution (GR) issued on October 29, the centres will act as dedicated hubs for visitor assistance, offering information about the forts’ historical significance, local attractions, and tourism facilities. The centres will also feature rest areas, sanitation facilities, and interactive digital kiosks to help tourists explore each site more meaningfully.
The development aligns with the state’s broader efforts to integrate technology and modern design into tourism infrastructure, ensuring that heritage sites remain accessible and engaging to both domestic and international travelers.
A Step Towards Regional Tourism Growth
The establishment of these centres marks a major step in Maharashtra’s Regional Tourism Development Scheme (2025–26), which focuses on decentralizing tourism opportunities and improving the visitor experience at historically rich but often underdeveloped destinations.
By choosing Raigad, Pratapgad, Shivneri, and Salher, the government is spotlighting sites that hold deep historical and cultural importance from Raigad’s legacy as Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj’s capital to Shivneri, the birthplace of the Maratha ruler himself.
Preserving Legacy, Promoting Accessibility
The ‘Namo Tourism Information and Facility Centres’ will not only serve as gateways to these iconic forts but also as community catalysts, generating employment opportunities for locals and encouraging entrepreneurship through souvenir shops, guided tours, and cultural experiences.
The project is part of a broader vision to position Maharashtra as a leading heritage tourism destination in India, balancing preservation with innovation and ensuring that visitors can experience history with greater comfort and context.
