Meerut–Varanasi Vande Bharat to Run via Ayodhya
In a strategic move aimed at enhancing regional connectivity and religious tourism, the Ministry of Railways has approved a new Vande Bharat Express route linking Meerut to Varanasi via Lucknow and Ayodhya. The route, scheduled to begin operations from August 25, is expected to bring significant socio-economic benefits to the region.
The update was shared in the Rajya Sabha by MP Dr. Laxmikant Bajpai, who revealed that this decision followed a directive from Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnav. The original plan for a Meerut–Lucknow route was shelved due to financial concerns. By extending the line to Ayodhya and Varanasi—both important religious centres—the route is now projected to achieve higher ridership and greater economic viability.
For travellers from western Uttar Pradesh, this high-speed train promises direct access to two of India’s most significant spiritual cities. Varanasi, already connected to Delhi by two Vande Bharat trains and another to Agra, will now gain a fresh link to Meerut—broadening travel options for pilgrims, students, and professionals.
The formal schedule is expected soon, but the anticipation is already growing. Local communities and tourism stakeholders have welcomed the announcement, citing it as a major step in improving rail connectivity and travel convenience within the state.
This move also reflects a broader shift in Indian Railways’ strategy—balancing operational sustainability with regional development. The addition of the Meerut–Lucknow–Ayodhya–Varanasi service is more than a new route; it’s a reflection of how infrastructure is being tailored to better serve cultural and economic needs.
As the Vande Bharat network expands, this route is poised to become a cornerstone in religious and heritage tourism, offering both speed and comfort to millions across Uttar Pradesh and beyond.
