The Department of Tourism, Government of Meghalaya, has officially launched the Autumn Calendar 2025, unveiling a stellar line-up of festivals that solidify Meghalaya’s position as one of India’s most vibrant cultural destinations. From world-class performances and international sporting events to grassroots music and sustainable showcases, this year’s calendar is designed to attract global audiences while empowering local talent.

Festivals as Strategic Investments

While launching the calendar, Shri Paul Lyngdoh, Hon’ble Minister of Tourism, Government of Meghalaya, emphasized the significance of festivals as investments rather than expenses.
“These festivals should not be seen as expenses but as investments that attract visitors, empower our local talents, boost the local economy, and create resources to support other essential sectors,” he said.

The diverse range of events reflects Meghalaya’s confidence in positioning itself as a cultural powerhouse while ensuring that communities and youth directly benefit from these initiatives.

Chief Minister’s Meghalaya Grassroots Music Project (CM-MGMP)

One of the defining highlights of 2025 is the CM-MGMP, which will host daily music sessions across the state. The programme has already left a significant cultural impact:

7,750+ artists have performed in over 13,000 shows.

Created 175 salaried jobs for crew and coordinators.

This year, CM-MGMP artists will participate in the North-East India Festival – Singapore and later perform at the World Expo in Osaka, Japan, showcasing Meghalaya’s music on international stages.

Megha Kayak Festival (October 14–18, Ri-Bhoi)

Adventure tourism takes the spotlight with the Megha Kayak Festival 2025 at Umtham Village, Ri-Bhoi. Known as one of the world’s most scenic kayaking destinations, the festival will welcome top kayakers from across the globe.

In 2024, the event featured three high-octane races with prize money of USD 20,000, cementing Meghalaya’s reputation as a global hub for kayaking and water sports.

Ahor 4×4 Off-Road Challenge (October 23–25)

The Ahor 4×4 Off-Road Challenge, now in its seventh edition, remains one of Northeast India’s most-followed motorsport events. The 2025 edition promises tougher tracks, extreme action, and participation from off-road enthusiasts nationwide.

Shillong Cherry Blossom Festival (November 14–15, JN Stadium Polo)

The much-awaited Shillong Cherry Blossom Festival 2025 will take place at Shillong’s JN Stadium Polo. The festival will feature global music icons such as Jason Derulo, The Script, and Nora Fatehi, with more international performers yet to be announced.

In 2024, performances by Akon, Boney M, and Clean Bandit generated an economic return of nearly ₹60 crore from a government investment of just ₹5 crore, proving its potential as a tourism driver.

Shillong Literary Festival (November 20–22)

The Shillong Literary Festival 2025 is set to return with a diverse line-up of authors, poets, and thinkers. The 2024 edition welcomed literary giants such as Vikram Seth and Shobhaa De, drawing nearly 20,000 visitors over three days.

Me·gong Festival (November 28–29, Songsak, East Garo Hills)

The Me·gong Festival will celebrate Meghalaya’s unique blend of culture, food, crafts, and music, bringing together local authenticity with international influences.

Last year’s edition featured legendary band EUROPE, alongside CM-MGMP grassroots artists, captivating festival-goers.

Winter Tales Festival (December 11–13, Ward’s Lake)

The season concludes with the Winter Tales Festival 2025, held at Ward’s Lake (Nan Polok). This intimate festival will spotlight indigenous art, crafts, food, and music in a serene setting.

In 2024, the festival featured storytelling, haiku jams, and the moving photo-travelogue “Through My Father’s Eyes”, alongside performances by local favorites.

Economic Impact of Festivals

The Government of Meghalaya views festivals as a catalyst for tourism and economic growth. In 2024, an investment of ₹23.50 crore generated a remarkable return of ₹133.42 crore.

With international artists, world-class sporting events, and thousands of grassroots performers, the Autumn Calendar 2025 is expected to deliver even greater returns, cementing Meghalaya’s role as a global cultural destination.
