Meghalaya Signs MoU with Japan to Create Global Career Pathways for Youth
The Government of Meghalaya, through the Meghalaya State Skill Development Society, has signed a landmark Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Asean One Co. Ltd., Japan on September 5, 2025, in Tokyo.
This milestone agreement is the outcome of Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma’s official visit to Japan in April 2025, where he envisioned creating global career opportunities for Meghalaya’s youth. The MoU marks a significant step in equipping young people with internationally relevant skills while strengthening ties with advanced economies like Japan.
Focus Areas of the Collaboration
The partnership between Meghalaya and Asean One Japan focuses on:
- Healthcare and Caregiving – addressing Japan’s growing need for skilled professionals.
- Hospitality and IT – creating career pathways in high-demand sectors.
- Japanese Language and Cultural Integration Training – ensuring smooth adaptation for candidates working in Japan.
The initiative will start with 500 candidates in the first year and scale up to 5,000 candidates over the next five years, creating a structured pipeline of globally employable professionals from Meghalaya.
Empowering Meghalaya’s Youth
Speaking at the signing event at the Indian Embassy in Tokyo, Shri Shakliar Warjri, Hon’ble Minister in charge of Labour, Employment & Skill Development, said: “This MoU is not just an agreement; it is a gateway for our young people to access international careers while deepening the cultural and economic ties between Meghalaya and Japan.”
The program will open up opportunities for Meghalaya’s youth to gain global exposure, professional growth, and sustainable employment in one of the world’s most advanced economies.
Alignment with India–Japan Global Skill Vision
The MoU also aligns with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of making India a Global Skill Hub. Mr. Toshiaki Nishikawa, Chairman and CEO of Asean One Japan, who has been actively working to strengthen workforce mobility between India and Japan, recently met PM Modi during the 15th India-Japan Annual Summit (August 2025, Tokyo).
This collaboration reflects a shared commitment to building sustainable frameworks for skill development and workforce mobility, empowering youth from Meghalaya to play a role in strengthening international cooperation.
