Nepal Issues Safety Advisory for Trekkers Amid Heavy Snowfall Warning
In light of deteriorating weather conditions across the Himalayan and hilly regions, the Nepal Tourism Board (NTB) has issued a safety advisory urging trekkers, mountaineers, and tour operators to exercise utmost caution while undertaking travel and adventure activities over the next few days.
Advisory Issued Following Weather Warnings
According to the Department of Hydrology and Meteorology (DHM), several regions in Gandaki, Lumbini, Karnali, and Sudurpaschim provinces are expected to experience heavy snowfall and adverse weather between October 27 and 29. The NTB has emphasized that all trekking groups and tour operators must closely monitor official weather updates before embarking on journeys in these areas.
The board’s statement highlights the increased risks of flooding, landslides, and precipitation-related hazards, which could impact popular trekking routes and high-altitude expeditions.
Districts on Alert
The DHM has identified several districts likely to be affected by severe weather, including Gorkha, Manang, Myagdi, Nawalpur, Kaski, Dolpa, Humla, Jumla, and Baglung. These areas, known for attracting a large number of trekkers during the autumn season, are expected to witness disruptions in trail conditions and travel routes due to heavy snowfall and rainfall.
Local authorities and tourism agencies have been advised to ensure timely communication with trekkers and implement emergency preparedness measures.
Focus on Trekker Safety and Preparedness
The NTB has reiterated that traveler safety remains the highest priority, urging both domestic and international tourists to remain vigilant and avoid risky trails during the adverse weather spell. Tour operators have also been asked to ensure that their clients are equipped with appropriate gear, guides, and updated route information.
The advisory serves as a reminder for tourists to register with local tourism offices before beginning treks and to keep emergency contacts readily accessible in case of unforeseen incidents.
Commitment to Safe Adventure Tourism
As Nepal continues to attract adventurers from around the world, especially during the autumn trekking season, the NTB’s proactive move underscores its commitment to maintaining safety and sustainability in the country’s tourism sector.
While the Himalayas continue to enchant travellers with their beauty and challenge, officials remind visitors that preparedness and caution are key to a safe and memorable experience in Nepal’s majestic landscapes.
