NITI Aayog Pushes Single-Window Clearance to Boost Homestays
Government think tank NITI Aayog has recommended a single-window clearance system for homestay registration, along with destination-focused financial incentives, in a bid to unlock the immense potential of homestays within India’s tourism landscape.
Rethinking Homestays: The Report
The recommendations were outlined in a report titled “Rethinking Homestays: Navigating Policy Pathways”, released on Friday. The report emphasizes the importance of simplifying regulations to empower local hosts and boost experiential tourism across India.
Streamlined Registration Process
To make homestay operations more accessible, the Aayog suggested streamlining the registration process by limiting documentation requirements to only essentials. These include:
- Proof of property ownership
- Applicant identification
- GST registration
By cutting down on bureaucratic hurdles, the aim is to encourage more individuals and communities to participate in the fast-growing homestay economy.
Involvement of Industry Leaders
The report was prepared with active involvement from leading online accommodation platforms such as Airbnb and MakeMyTrip. Their collaboration highlights the need for a public-private approach to build a stronger framework for India’s homestay ecosystem.
Driving Tourism and Local Economies
Homestays have increasingly emerged as a preferred choice for domestic and international travelers seeking authentic cultural experiences. NITI Aayog believes that by offering targeted financial incentives and a smooth regulatory process, homestays can significantly boost local employment, empower communities, and diversify India’s tourism offerings beyond traditional destinations.
Towards a Sustainable Future in Tourism
The call for policy reforms aligns with India’s larger vision to make tourism more inclusive, sustainable, and community-driven. As travelers continue to seek immersive stays, homestays hold the key to reshaping how India is experienced through its people, culture, and traditions.
