Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi laid the foundation stone and inaugurated multiple development projects valued at over ₹5,200 crore in Kolkata, West Bengal. Addressing the gathering, he said he was once again privileged to accelerate the pace of development in the state.

During his visit, the Prime Minister shared his experience of traveling by Kolkata Metro from Noapara to Jai Hind Airport, noting the excitement of passengers about the modernization of the city’s public transport system. He also laid the foundation stone for the six-lane elevated Kona Expressway, congratulating the people of Kolkata and West Bengal for these multi-crore projects.

Kolkata’s Role in India’s Growth Story

Calling Kolkata a city that embodies both India’s history and future, Shri Modi emphasized its importance as India moves towards becoming the world’s third-largest economy. He said that today’s programme signifies more than the inauguration of metro lines or highways-it reflects how modern India is reshaping its urban landscape.

He highlighted ongoing efforts to promote green mobility, including increasing the number of electric buses and charging points, while also generating electricity under the ‘Waste to Wealth’ initiative.

Expansion of Kolkata Metro Network

The Prime Minister expressed pride that India now has the world’s third-largest metro network, with routes expanding from just 250 km before 2014 to over 1,000 km today.

In Kolkata, he informed that about 14 km of new metro lines and seven new stations are being added to the network. He stressed that these upgrades will enhance the Ease of Living and Ease of Travel for citizens.

21st-Century Transport Vision

Shri Modi underlined that 21st-century India requires a 21st-century transport system, and the government is working to integrate railways, roads, metros, and airports for seamless multi-modal connectivity.

He noted how two of India’s busiest railway stations, Howrah and Sealdah, are now connected via metro, reducing travel time from nearly 90 minutes to just a few minutes. The new Howrah Station subway will further reduce interchange time for passengers traveling on Eastern and South Eastern Railway routes.

The Prime Minister also announced that the Kolkata Airport is now linked to the metro network, improving accessibility from distant parts of the city.

Rail and Infrastructure Development in West Bengal

Highlighting recent achievements, Shri Modi confirmed that West Bengal has achieved 100% railway electrification. He also addressed the long-standing demand for a MEMU train between Purulia and Howrah, which has now been fulfilled.

Currently, nine Vande Bharat trains operate in West Bengal, along with two Amrit Bharat trains introduced for passengers.

The Prime Minister further noted that several major highway projects have been completed in the past 11 years, while many more are in progress. The six-lane Kona Expressway, once completed, will greatly enhance port connectivity.

Strengthening the Future of Kolkata and West Bengal

Concluding his address, Shri Modi said that the new connectivity and infrastructure projects will lay a strong foundation for a brighter future for Kolkata and West Bengal.

The event was attended by Governor of West Bengal Dr. C.V. Ananda Bose, Union Ministers Shantanu Thakur, Ravneet Singh Bittu, and Dr. Sukanta Majumdar, along with other dignitaries.
