Restored Mughal-Era Sheesh Mahal Reopens in Shalimar Bagh, Adding New Spark to Delhi Tourism

In a significant boost to Delhi tourism, the historic Sheesh Mahal, a Mughal-era palace located in Shalimar Bagh, North Delhi, has been beautifully restored and reopened to the public. The unveiling ceremony took place on Wednesday, July 2, 2025, with Union Culture and Tourism Minister Gajendra Singh Shekhawat officiating the event.

Built in 1653 during the reign of Emperor Shah Jahan, Sheesh Mahal stands as a striking example of Mughal architecture and once served as a royal retreat. The palace and its surrounding gardens—now designated as protected monuments by the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI)—had fallen into neglect for many years. However, following a visit by Delhi Lieutenant Governor Vinai Kumar Saxena in January 2024, restoration efforts gained fresh momentum.

A Collaborative Effort to Revive Heritage

The ASI led the careful restoration of the palace’s architectural and heritage features, while the Delhi Development Authority (DDA) meticulously recreated the iconic Char Bagh-style Mughal garden, reviving the original layout and grandeur of the estate. The combined efforts have transformed Sheesh Mahal into not just a historical attraction but also a serene green space within the city.

Originally named Aizzabad Garden, Shalimar Bagh was reportedly commissioned by Shah Jahan in memory of Aizzun-Nisha Begum, one of his consorts. The name Shalimar is believed to derive from the Persian words Shala and Mara, meaning “abode of pleasure,” and is said to have been given by the emperor himself.

The site also carries historical weight as the venue of Aurangzeb’s first coronation in 1658, further enhancing its cultural and historical significance.

Blending Heritage with Modern Utility

In addition to restoring the Sheesh Mahal, DDA has also refurbished a baradari (pavilion) and three heritage cottages using traditional materials such as lime surkhi, lakhauri bricks, and organic binders including jaggery (gud), bael fruit (belgiri), and urad dal. Two of these heritage cottages have been adapted for modern use: one now serves as The Readers Café Corner, offering a literary space for visitors, while the other has been transformed into Café Shalimar, providing refreshments to those enjoying the lush grounds.

These thoughtful upgrades aim to enhance visitor engagement while preserving the site’s authenticity, making it a compelling stop for both history enthusiasts and leisure seekers.

A Call for Preservation

Speaking at the inauguration, Lieutenant Governor VK Saxena emphasized the collective responsibility in maintaining such historical treasures: “Let us ensure these priceless monuments remain clean, green, and protected from encroachment.”

A Cultural Revival for the Capital

The reopening of Sheesh Mahal not only marks the revival of a historical landmark but also reinforces Delhi’s standing as a cultural capital, brimming with centuries of rich heritage. It offers both locals and tourists a renewed opportunity to explore the grandeur of Mughal-era architecture within the modern cityscape.

As Delhi continues to spotlight its architectural and historical gems, the restoration of Sheesh Mahal is a proud testament to India’s ongoing commitment to heritage conservation and sustainable tourism.

This restored palace, now complete with heritage cafés, scenic gardens, and a renewed cultural presence, is poised to become a major draw in the landscape of Delhi tourism.
