Ropeway from Rishikesh to Kunjapuri Temple set to enhance spiritual tourism
In a significant move to enhance spiritual tourism and regional infrastructure, the Uttarakhand Tourism Development Board has entered into a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Swiss ropeway leader Bartholet Maschinenbau AG. The agreement outlines plans to construct a ropeway connecting Tapovan in Rishikesh to the Kunjapuri Temple in Narendranagar. Spearheaded by Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami and Tourism Minister Satpal Maharaj, this ambitious project is designed to provide safer, quicker, and more eco-friendly access to the revered hilltop shrine.
Bartholet, a prominent Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) and part of the globally recognized HTI Group, will finance and develop the Detailed Project Report (DPR). This includes an in-depth techno-economic study to ensure adherence to top-tier international benchmarks.
What makes this project unique is Bartholet’s full-spectrum involvement—from concept design to commissioning and operation—marking the first time such a comprehensive model has been adopted for a ropeway project in India. This end-to-end engagement is expected to minimize design issues and avoid technical setbacks, thereby enabling seamless execution and quicker completion.
Upon completion, the ropeway will significantly reduce travel time, enhance tourist footfall, and promote sustainable development in the region—setting a new benchmark in India’s ropeway infrastructure landscape.
